Free Bikes for Kidz Returns! We need your help.

Nice Ride Minnesota is pleased to again contribute to Free Bikes 4 Kidz after a very successful 2010 partnership with Allina Hospital and Clinics and Freewheel Bike Shop. We need your help! Either donate a bike or help fix up a bike between October 22-December 11. Help spread the holiday cheer.

The spirit of the holiday season starts early at the Midtown Bike Center. October is the time Nice Ride Minnesota, Freewheel Bike Shop, and Allina Hospitals and Clinics start working together to make the holiday season more joyful for kids in the Twin Cities by partnering with Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K). Over the next two months, FB4K hopes to receive donations of 5,000 gently-used bicycles. The bikes will be cleaned and repaired at several sites around the Twin Cities metro area, and then be given away to kids in need. This work takes place between October 22nd and December 11th.

In 2010, Allina, Nice Ride and Freewheel collaborated to fix over 350 kids bikes. This year, you again have the opportunity to help Nice Ride repair and clean bikes at the Freewheel Midtown Bike Center. Repair skills are welcome, but not necessary. Freewheel Mechanics will check and approve all bikes. We already have 146 bikes in the warehouse ready to be fixed, and estimate more than 500 bikes to be given away in the 2011 season just from the coalition of Allina Hospitals and Clinics, Freewheel Bike Shop, and Nice Ride Minnesota. State wide, FB4Kz expects more than 5,000 bikes to be given away this season.

5,000 bikes in two months? Sound impossible? Not so with the help of the Nice Ride community and the passionate cyclists that give us so much support.

Here's how you can help:

From the FAQ

How do I return a bike?

Push the front wheel of the bike firmly into the bike dock until the green light on the dock comes on. The green light indicates that the bike is locked and properly returned. If the red light on the bike dock stays on, remove the bike and try another empty bike dock. The bike remains your responsibility until it is properly returned.
