Riding on Stone Arch Bridge

On June 10th, 2010, the Nice Ride system launched with 350 people riding the bright green bikes down Nicollet Mall. With 65 stations in Minneapolis, the project started as the first large-scale urban bike share experiment in the United States. We’re celebrating our fifth birthday now, and things sure have changed since that first bike ride. This season there were more trips taken by Memorial Day weekend than during the entire first season. Bike sharing has become an integral part of Twin Cities culture and helped Minneapolis rank as a top 20 bike city in the world.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has been with us from the beginning. As the title sponsor of Nice Ride they stand with us now more than ever before. Thanks to their support, we’ve been able to explore innovative solutions that bring active transportation options to new communities. As we continue to expand the urban system, we’re also piloting new concepts like Nice Ride Neighborhood, Wheel Being and Nice Ride Bemidji throughout Minnesota.

This summer we will publish a data set and engage the Twin Cities in an open discussion about where bike share is working, what we can do better, and new ideas to put people on two wheels.

We’re celebrating on Sunday and we need you there with us - take a look at the event details and join for the fun. We’ll be giving away 1,000 Seward Co-Op carrot cupcakes and 200 green apples at the Nice Ride tent on 26th & Lyndale - they’ll be available starting at 12:00 pm after the bike ride down Lyndale to celebrate the anniversary. Those that participate in the ride will get first priority. We’ll also be offering discounts on new 30-day memberships and helmets for those who sign up at the event.

Everything kicks off at 11 am with a bike ride starting at the Wedge Co-Op stage at 22nd St and Lyndale Ave. Join us as we celebrate the fifth anniversary of Open Streets Lyndale and the fifth anniversary of the launch of the Nice Ride bike share. Speakers will include Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and Director of the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Janelle Waldock.
