Motivate, North America’s Bike Share Leader, to Begin Operations and Usher in Upgrades, Lower Pricing

Minneapolis’ public bike share system to debut new dockless bikes, expand into new neighborhoods starting late summer 2018

Single rides will fall to as low as $1 to celebrate exciting development

MINNEAPOLIS (July 2, 2018) – Beginning July 2, Motivate, the leading bike share operator in North America, will begin operating Nice Ride Minnesota. To celebrate this exciting development, Nice Ride Minnesota is lowering the price of single rides from $3 to $2 when purchased at a kiosk and only $1 when purchased through the Nice Ride Bike Share app. Usage fees will also be lowered to $2 per half hour.

Starting late summer 2018, 1,500 new bikes will be added to Nice Ride Minnesota’s existing bikeshare fleet in Minneapolis. The bikes will have mobile-friendly, GPS technology and will not be required to be parked at stations. Concurrently, Nice Ride Minnesota is working with the City of Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Parks, and urban planning leaders to develop virtual parking zones for the new bikes. With 500 additional parking zones, the expanded system provides dedicated yet flexible spaces to park the bikes and increased equitable access to new neighborhoods across Minneapolis.

“After months of work, we are thrilled to have chosen Motivate as our partner to propel Nice Ride Minnesota into the next generation of bike share systems,” said Bill Dossett, Executive Director of Nice Ride Minnesota. “As we take these next steps into dockless bike sharing and continue to grow, I am excited to work with a team that is passionate about what Nice Ride Minnesota means to the local community. Every ride tells a story.”

Nice Ride’s relationship with Motivate will offer opportunities for growth into new sectors of bike share such as electric bikes and a winter bike program. As the new bikes launch, users will see additional upgrades, including a new website, mobile app, and more.

“At Motivate, we’re committed to making cities more accessible, healthier and sustainable, and we’re thrilled to align with Nice Ride Minnesota as they begin this new chapter” said Jay Walder, President and CEO of Motivate. “By operating bike share systems in America’s leading cities, Motivate has developed industry expertise, best-in-class operations, and exciting innovations that we can’t wait to bring to Nice Ride and its riders.”

Since Nice Ride’s inception, as title sponsor, Blue Cross Blue Shield Minnesota has enabled the system to reach more people in more places, while improving the health and vitality of the Twin Cities community.

“Over the past decade, Nice Ride has transformed Minnesota communities into places where it’s natural for people to hop on a bike to get where they need to go,” said Janelle Waldock, Vice President of Community Health and Health Equity at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.  “Blue Cross is excited about the evolution of Nice Ride and bringing even more biking options to Minnesotans.  Our support of Nice Ride in bringing more sustainable, fun, and healthy transportation options to our communities allows us to stay true to our mission of making a healthy difference in people’s lives.”
